A Child That Changes The World

Isaiah chapter nine is a powerful prophetic word about the coming of the future Messiah. It describes how the long-awaited Saviour will bring light to the whole world, enlarge the nations, and shatter yokes of burden.

And after all this passionate build-up of immense promise, comes this unexpected little phrase:

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given” (v.6).

It seems, so… anticlimactic.

A child?

A child is going to change everything?

Yes!  A child who turns the whole world upside down!

And though Jesus was the Messiah, God desires to use our children to bless the world too: they are seeds with all the future potential written within them already, yet hidden to the eyes of a prejudiced world that doesn’t see children as the reward they are.

God likes to do things the upside-down way.

God loves children, because not only will they fight one day, they are Kingdom warriors now!

“Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.” (Ps. 8:2)

God has disguised His best gifts for the future inside the hearts of our children.  It is our work to call forth His purposes in their lives and set them free to do the work He created in advance for them to do.

Yet, all this happens at a cost: our own lives.

As we lay ourselves down for our children, we take hold of a vision that is about more than ourselves, we contribute to the greater work of God in this world: the great passion story of true love and ultimate redemption.

Do not be wooed into thinking that politicians or famous people or rock stars have all the influence. We, at home, with our little lights shining, are participating in a force that will bring light to this world and set captives free.

God loves to hear the praises of our children, which push back the darkness and silence the enemy. And, as our Kingdom-empowered children grow into adulthood, they will bring new art forms, new scientific discoveries, new business strategies, and new blessing to the world, beyond what we’ve yet imagined!

Don’t ignore children while they are young and expect to reap rewards later – this is the way the God-less world works.

We need to stay vigilant and on our knees, fight through the tears, and work through the tough days, because we are in the trenches, preparing a future through our children that absolutely has the enemy quaking in fear.

The enemy fears the power of children (and a whole generation!) who know their identity in God.

Consider at least two times that the enemy has inspired men to kill babies in an attempt to prevent the birth of a leader whom the enemy feared would set an oppressed people free: Pharaoh vs. baby Moses, Herod vs. baby Jesus.  Is it possible that Satan has an even greater view of our children’s potential than we do?

That is why Satan convinces society to kill babies (abortion), not want “too many” (birth control), and – for those children who get to live – he tries to convince parents to turn them over to government/media/peer (school/culture) propaganda as soon as possible.  Recall, Satan’s only weapons are lies.  The lie here is “If we have another child, things will be worse.”  God contradicts that lie all through the scriptures!  It is the same lie believed by Herod when he attempted to kill the very baby that was born to bring him peace with God, something Herod desperately needed.

Our society believes more children bring trouble rather than blessing.  This conclusion is reached when we judge by our experiences with our children’s difficult behaviour, our sleeplessness, our worn out bodies, and our drooping bank balance.  The experience of this adversity must instead become fuel for us to fight back, to dig in, and exercise our faith in God’s promises.

The enemy wants to create walls and disconnect between children and their parents, and barriers between children and God. Yet, WE are the barrier between the darkness and our children! We must stand and proclaim that God’s promises are true – that children are a blessing and that they are worthy of us laying down our lives.

Expect push-back from the dark side.

But, remember, the Light has already won.
